How to make pizza sauce from scratch?
This pizza sauce is made with tomato puree. You can either use store-bought tomato puree or you can make homemade tomato puree with fresh tomatoes. I personally prefer store-bought tomato puree as it provides a beautiful rich colour to the sauce. Along with this, you will need garlic, onion, a few herbs and spices.
What consistency the pizza sauce be?
A good pizza sauce should have a thick consistency. It shouldn’t be watery or runny. Otherwise, the sauce might make the pizza base/crust soggy.
How much pizza sauce to use?
This recipe makes around 3 cups of pizza sauce. And you should only use 1/4 cup of sauce for a 9-10 inch pizza. Spread it evenly across the pizza, leaving a 1cm border around the edge of the pizza base.
How to store pizza sauce?
This recipe makes 3 cups of sauce, with which you can easily make around 12 pizzas. So you can use as much as you like and then store the leftover sauce into an airtight jar or container in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can also freeze the sauce in a freezer-safe container for up to a month.

How to reheat frozen pizza sauce?
Thaw the frozen sauce and pour it into a saucepan. Heat it over a low flame and cover it with a lid. Heat it for 10-15 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
What are the other uses of pizza sauce?
Other than being used over a pizza, a pizza sauce can actually be used in many other ways. Like for example, you can mix it with any kind of pasta or you can also apply it over bread slices just like a spread or use it as a dipping sauce with nachos. You can do so much with it.

Yield: Approximately 2.5 – 3 cups pizza sauce
Ingredients:
- 3 cups or 675g tomato puree
- 2 tbsp garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp black pepper powder
- 3 tsp oregano, dried
- 2 tsp basil, dried
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 1.5 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp salt, or as per your liking
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 tbsp olive oil
Cooking Directions:
Heat a heavy-bottomed pot over medium flame. Pour olive oil and allow it to heat up a little. Then add chopped garlic. Give it a stir and cook for 1-2 minutes or until it is fragrant. The garlic should become slightly soft and its colour should remain white/cream.
Add the chopped onions into the pot. Sweat them for a few minutes until they become translucent. Again, don’t overcook, the onions shouldn’t develop any colour.
Pour tomato puree, oregano, basil, paprika, black pepper powder, sugar, salt and water. Give it a good stir.
Allow the pizza sauce to come to a simmer. Then reduce the heat to low.
Cover it with a lid and allow it to simmer for 5-6 minutes while stirring occasionally.
Uncover the pot and give it a stir. Let it cook for another 5-6 minutes. Keep stirring frequently and allow the sauce to thicken.
As soon as the sauce thickens, turn the flame off. Allow it to cool down completely. Then you can either pour a few spoonfuls of it over a pizza base and make your favourite pizza. Or pour it in a clean and airtight jar. Then store it in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.
