What is a no-yeast bread?
No-yeast bread means a loaf of bread that is made without yeast. Yeast works as a leavening agent in bread. So instead of yeast, we will be using baking soda, baking powder and flaxseeds in this recipe.
What are flaxseeds?
Flaxseeds or alsi ke beej are shiny and nutty seeds, that are a good source of many nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin B1 and so on. Including it to your diet can be highly beneficial. It helps in reducing the risk of stroke, maintains hormone levels, promotes weight management etc.
What is a flax egg?
A flax egg is a vegan egg substitute, that you can use in your bread or cake recipes. It is made by mixing ground flax seeds with water and letting it sit for a few minutes until it thickens up.
1 egg = 1 tablespoon flaxseed + 3 tablespoon water
Must-Have Tools:
- 1 small-sized bowl
- 2 medium-sized bowls
- 1 spatula
- 1 loaf pan
Prep Time: 10 min | Bake Time: 50 min | Total Time: 1 hour
Serves 4 people
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 3 tbsp water
- ¾ cup curd/yoghurt
- ¾ cup milk
- ¼ cup oil
- 2 tbsp honey
Baking Directions:
Preheat oven to 190-degree Celsius.
In a small bowl, add ground flaxseed and water. Whisk them together and cover it with a lid. Allow it to rest until it becomes thick and looks like gelatin. It may approximately take 10-15 minutes.
In a large bowl, add all-purpose flour, wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir well and keep it aside.
In another bowl, pour yoghurt, milk, oil, honey and flaxseed mixture. Mix well.
Then pour the yoghurt mixture into the flour mixture. Gently combine everything together. Avoid over mixing, as it may make the bread dense.
Pour the bread batter into a baking tin lined with baking paper. With a spatula spread the batter evenly. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a wooden skewer inserted in the middle of the bread comes out clean and the top is golden brown in colour.
Take it out of the oven and allow it to cool down completely before slicing. Generously apply butter over the freshly baked bread slices and enjoy.
Recipe Notes:
- Preheat the oven for at least 10 minutes.
- As soon as you mix the dry and wet ingredients, a chemical reaction starts between them. So I will advise you to not waste any time and pour the batter in the lined loaf pan and keep it inside the preheated oven to bake.
- You can store this no-yeast bread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
